  8. Unitrol's Immunity Disk Mirroring Software v1.x is compatible with LANtastic 
  9. NOS version 4.xx running with MS-DOS 3.3 or higher.

  11. Product Overview
  12. Disk Mirroring, a process of operating 2 hard disk drives as one, can be 
  13. achieved on a LANtastic network through the use of Unitrol's Immunity 
  14. system.  Any activity that occurs on one disk (the primary drive) is 
  15. duplicated or "mirrored" on the second disk (the secondary drive).   In 
  16. case of hard disk failure on one of the drives, processing will automatically 
  17. be continued on the remaining error-free disk, thus avoiding data loss and 
  18. interrupts in system operation.  Disk mirroring can also be used as a means 
  19. of providing on-line backup.
  20.  
  21. Product Installation Notes
  22. To start with, you'll need 2 physical hard disks within one PC.  They may 
  23. be of different capacity, brand and type, and can be connected to one or 
  24. two disk controllers.  The two disks must reside within the same PC as 
  25. mirroring cannot be performed over the network.  
  26.  
  27. Immunity disk mirroring can reside on servers or workstations or both.  
  28. Before installing the software, both drives must be partitioned using 
  29. the FDISK command (from MS-PC/DOS 3.3 or higher) and formatted using 
  30. FORMAT (also a DOS utility).   Run INSTALL from the floppy disk that 
  31. comes with Immunity, which will modify your config.sys and install 
  32. the device driver IMMUNITY.SYS.  It will also add 1 line in your 
  33. autoexec.bat: IMMUNITY -b to verify that contents of the mirrored 
  34. drives are synchronized every time you start your computer.  
  35.  
  36. INSTALL also performs a "Resynchronize Primary Disk To Secondary Disk", 
  37. which mirrors all the selected data on the primary disk to the secondary 
  38. disk.  Upon completion of the "Resynchronization", both disks will contain 
  39. identical data.  From this point on, disk mirroring will be transparent to 
  40. the operating system.

  42. Product Execution Notes
  43. Under normal operation, disk mirroring requires no attention.  It sits 
  44. invisibly in the background duplicating all writes to the secondary disk 
  45. and monitoring the status of both disks.  Just read the manual in advance 
  46. to make sure that you follow the proper operation procedures in the event 
  47. of a hard disk failure.  When a disk failure does occur, a message is 
  48. flashed on the top of the PC's screen indicating that a disk has failed.  
  49.  
  50. Operation then continues on the error-free disk, but you will no longer 
  51. have disk-mirroring protection.  It is strongly recommended that you 
  52. repair or replace the defective disk, re-synch the data and then put 
  53. disk-mirroring back on again.

  55. If drive c:(primary) is mirrored to drive d:(secondary), and the user 
  56. attempts to access drive d:(secondary), s/he will get a general failure 
  57. message.

  59. Performance Evaluations
  60. Since Immunity writes to 2 disks instead of 1, a small performance 
  61. tradeoff should be expected.  However, the system will try to compensate 
  62. this by saving time during the read operations through a method known as 
  63. Fastseek.  Fastseek allows the system to read from the hard disk whose 
  64. head is closest to the data.  This also decreases the wear and tear on a 
  65. hard disk due to head movement.  Unitrol's lab tests have shown a 5-8% 
  66. overall decrease in performance, since most systems do much more reading 
  67. (about 80%) than writing (about 20%).  Performance testing results of 
  68. course depend on the benchmark tests being performed.
